‘No trust at board level’ – Finance expert on relationship between Spurs and Liverpool

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has backed the Tottenham board and Liverpool board to put aside their differences following the Luis Diaz transfer saga and work together in the future.

The Athletic revealed last week that Daniel Levy was not impressed by the way Liverpool conducted themselves in their pursuit of Diaz.

The report claimed the Reds had waited until Spurs had negotiated a fee with Porto and personal terms with the winger before swooping in to steal the player from under Spurs’ noses.

It was suggested that Liverpool’s actions could usher in a period of hostility between the two sets of owners.

However, Maguire has dismissed this as a possibility, insisting that the Spurs hierarchy and the Liverpool hierarchy will continue working together to consolidate power at the top of the Premier League food chain.

He asserted that the Diaz saga will not stop the two clubs from forming alliances on matters of mutual interest in the future.

He told Football Insider: “If they can see something which is of mutual benefit, they will work together.”

“They will continue to try and concentrate power, decision making and money in the hands of the few.

“There is no trust at board level between the different clubs. They form alliances of convenience and nothing more than that.

“If it’s in Spurs’ best interest to join forces with Liverpool on a future issue, they will do so, and that is what I expect.”

Maguire’s take certainly makes sense when one considers how the owners of the ‘big six’ have worked together in recent years despite the differences between them.

However, one cannot say anything definitive on the matter without knowing the facts of what went on in the Diaz saga.

It is worth remembering that Levy stopped doing any business with Chelsea after the Willian saga in 2013. So, the Spurs chairman has a history of drawing a line in the sand on these matters.
