‘Not a chance’ – Troy Deeney takes issue with what Spurs fans are saying to him

Troy Deeney is surprised that some Spurs fans want to see their side throw their game against Manchester City, with the pundit insisting that all teams, including Tottenham, should want a team other than Pep Guardiola’s side to win the Premier League this season.

Spurs now find themselves in a tricky spot as they know they could potentially hand Arsenal the Premier League title if they were to get a result against Man City, who come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday.

Almost all Spurs fans want their side to lose against City as they do not want to see the Gunners lifting the trophy. That is even more true now, given that the Lilywhites look unlikely to qualify for the Champions League even if they beat the reigning Premier League champions.

Troy Deeney dismisses Spurs doing Man City a favour

However, Deeney believes that Spurs fans should want Arsenal to lift the trophy as seeing someone finish above City will give every side in the division hope that they can also get their hands on the big prize.

The former Watford striker wrote in The Sun: “I know a few Tottenham fans who have told me they would love to see Ange Postecoglou put the kids out to face Manchester City on Tuesday night, so Arsenal can’t win the league.

“I have to be honest – it’s a ******* weird take. You hate another team so much that you want City to win it, again? Not a chance. I’m getting to a point where, as a football fan, I want a different team to win the league. Not because City are terrible but it just gets boring.

“We want to see the likes of City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and, hopefully, Spurs all pushing and competing until the final ebbs of the season.

“I want to be sat there thinking, ‘Blimey, who’s going to win the league?’ rather than, ‘This is a done deal, it’s City, roll on the summer’ because it becomes a waste of time.

“So, here we go: Tottenham should want to help Arsenal win the title by getting a result against City. It will give themselves and everyone else hope that they can win it one day.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I understand where Deeney is coming from but if he understood anything about how fans think, he would realise that no supporter would want to see their rival side win the league under any circumstances.
