‘Not a magician’ – Former Spurs man insists Antonio Conte is ‘not enough’

Stephane Dalmat has claimed Tottenham need more than just Antonio Conte to turn their fortunes around, insisting the Italian coach is ‘not a magician’.

Conte arrived at Spurs in November with the club sitting in eighth in the Premier League table and he has overseen an impressive turnaround during his first few months in charge.

The Lilywhites currently occupy fourth place with qualification for next season’s Champions League in their hands.

While a place in Europe’s top-tier competition will be Tottenham’s goal at present, the absence of silverware for more than 14 years will also remain prominently in the picture moving forward.

And while Conte, a serial winner with Juventus, Chelsea and most recently Inter Milan, is expected to try and bring an end to that drought, ex-Spurs defender Dalmat is not convinced that is an achievable feat just yet.

The Frenchman, who spent the 2003-04 campaign on loan at Spurs, believes Conte has the credentials to bring success but is ‘not a magician’ and needs backing from the club.

Dalmat told Spazio Inter: “In my opinion, Conte is not enough. On paper, there’s Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City which are superior. Conte is an excellent coach, but he is not a magician.”

Conte has the experience and the ideas to lead Spurs to silverware, but Dalmat would be correct in saying that bringing success back to the club can’t be put on him alone.

They need to listen to what Conte wants to address this summer and make sure he is adequately supported so he can keep building and becoming more competitive.
