‘Not confirmed’ – Jurgen Klopp issues Liverpool COVID update ahead of Spurs encounter

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has provided an update on the status of Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones ahead of his side’s meeting with Tottenham this weekend.

The Reds trio missed out on Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Newcastle on Thursday night for precautionary reasons after returning ‘suspected’ positive Covid-19 tests.

However, there is an element of doubt over the accuracy of the results and their availability for the trip to Tottenham on Sunday is now up in the air.

Klopp admitted the club is managing what is an ‘ongoing process’ regarding the absentees, but confirmed there have been no other Liverpool players who have since tested positive.

In a press conference, he said (via Liverpool Echo): “It’s not confirmed yet, that’s an ongoing process – but they are not here.

“They are fine, apart from that. In this moment there is nobody else positive, but it is pretty early still and the players come a bit later so we will see.”

The spread of Covid has accelerated across the Premier Leagues, with officials since making the decision to postpone five fixtures this weekend.

Liverpool’s match against Spurs is still scheduled to go ahead and despite what is an uncertain situation, though Klopp admitted he would be happy to play out the encounter barring any further positive tests in his squad.

He added: “We have a game to play and Thursday, Sunday is a tough rhythm. We have no information about Tottenham, I have no idea if they have trained since today. It is difficult to get any kind of information which is used as preparation for the game.

“Regarding the integrity of the game, I don’t know when all these games will be played. Where is the space for them to be played? I don’t know all these kind of things.

“We don’t think we shouldn’t play on Sunday. But if, in two hours when the players arrive, we have six, seven or eight more cases then we cannot play. In a situation we are in now, we can play and would like to play.”

Spurs Web Opinion

At the moment it seems as if a circuit-breaker is on the horizon and quickly approaching with clubs starting to provide a host of positive cases. The Premier League will want to avoid a backlog of games too, so they will likely want to push for this match to go ahead as long as it is safe to do so.
