‘Not going to happen’ – Journalist completely rules out Ajax move for Spurs player

Dutch journalist Mike Verweij believes that Ajax have no chance of signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as Tottenham are unwilling to compromise on their demands.

Last week, The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare reported that while Spurs are ready to listen to offers for Hojbjerg in January, there is no clarity at the moment on where he is going to end up.

Eccleshare explained that Ajax had expressed interest but were not confident of completing the deal since Tottenham do not wish to loan out the midfielder. He further added that the Dane’s preference would be to join Juventus if the Serie A giants do end up pushing for him.

A few days ago, Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Juve’s pursuit of the Tottenham man had been boosted as Spurs had changed their stance and were ready to agree an initial loan deal for the midfielder as long as it comes with an obligation to buy.

Ajax will not sign Hojbjerg from Tottenham

Verweij has now ruled out the possibility of the former Southampton man moving to the Johan Cruyff Arena in January, insisting that Ajax supporters should not get their hopes up.

Speaking about the Eredivisie club’s interest in Hojbjerg, the journalist told De Telegraaf’s podcast, Kick-Off (as relayed by Sport Witness): “It is completely unfeasible. Ajax can only rent, Tottenham Hotspur does not want that at all.

“Moreover, there are many other clubs, including Italian clubs, that want him. So that’s not going to happen. I can really dispel any fans who think that there will be four or five new players because that is not going to happen.”

Fellow journalist Jeroen Kapteijns then added: “Tottenham does not give an inch in negotiations and really makes you pay the main price.”

Even if Tottenham are to relax their stance on Hojbjerg (which is possible given that Gallagher now appears to be on the market), I highly doubt if the Dane would be too keen on joining Ajax, especially when the likes of Juve and Napoli are rumoured to be after him.
