‘Not take any chances’ – Nuno sounds warning over defender ahead of new season

Nuno Espirito Santo has admitted that the club are cautious about the way they manage new signing Cristian Romero, who picked up a knee problem in the final of Copa America.

The transfer saga that seemed to go on forever was finally brought to an end by Tottenham on Friday when they confirmed Romero’s arrival.

The player has signed on an initial loan deal from Atalanta, with the North London club having the option to make the deal permanent for a £42.5m fee.

Spurs will be hopeful that the Argentine, who was voted as the Serie A Defender of the Year last season at Atalanta, will help fix their backline which was extremely leaky last campaign.

Nuno admitted that the club analysed the 23-year-old in detail and waxed lyrical about the defender’s qualities.

When asked about Tottenham’s latest signing, the Portuguese coach told Football.London: “He is a fantastic defender. Very good player.

“Prove himself not only in Serie A but the national team in Copa America. We look at him in detail, and analysed him and think he can help the team.”

Nuno also revealed that Romero is recovering well from the injury he picked up during Copa America but added that he is in no rush to integrate the centre-back into the team.

When asked about the defender’s injury, the Spurs boss said: “He didn’t train yet with the group. It’s true, he finished the Copa America in the last game with a problem.

“It’s much better, much better now but we have to be very careful first, not take any chances.

“He, like all the players, Gio for example didn’t have too many sessions. Hugo. We have to manage a lot of aspects until the moment that we decide to put the player on the pitch.

“He is here, looks good and when he starts training in a normal way he will become an option.”

It sounds like Romero is unlikely to start the first few games of the season. With Davinson Sanchez also being linked with a move away, it looks like Nuno might have to partner one of either Tanganga or Rodon with Dier against City.
