‘Not that sort of player’ – Club legend claims £36m PL man is not what Spurs need

Graham Roberts has claimed that Manchester United outcast Donny van de Beek is not the type of player that Tottenham currently need.

The 24-year-old joined the Red Devils from Ajax last year in a deal worth €40 million (£35.7m), but has struggled to make any sort of impact at Old Trafford.

He started just four Premier League games last season and made just 19 appearances in the competition. That has not changed much in the new campaign either, as he currently has just six minutes of action under his belt in the top flight.

Tottenham reportedly once held a strong interest in Van de Beek but Man United beat the North London side to his transfer.

Spurs legend Roberts was asked about his former side potentially re-entering the pursuit for the out-of-favour United man, but he is not convinced the Dutchman is the type of player Nuno Espirito Santo needs.

Roberts told This Is Futbol: “We looked at him but is he a creative midfield player? I think he’s more of an up and downer isn’t he, box-to-box.

“Is he a creative [player] who can pick the ball up and play the ball over the top for Son and Kane to run onto? He’s not that sort of player I don’t think. Man United are not going to let him go for peanuts.

“They will want thirty, forty million for him, which I think they will struggle, so, I just don’t think he’s that person that we need. I think we need a really good creative midfielder.”

Spurs were heavily linked to van de Beek after his performances against them in the Champions League. He hasn’t hit the ground running at all at Man Utd, but they will no doubt be keen to receive a fee close to what they paid in a potential sale.
