‘Not top of the list’ – Journalist gives his take on Maddison to Spurs rumours

The Athletic journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke has claimed Leicester midfielder James Maddison is not at the top of Tottenham’s list of transfer targets.

The Telegraph have claimed the Foxes could be willing to listen to offers for Maddison, having found themselves in a position where they need to sell before they can buy.

Spurs have emerged as potential suitors for the 25-year-old playmaker with head coach Antonio Conte wanting to add another two signings to the six he has already brought in (Football.London)

However, the same report added a move for the England international, who tallied 18 goals and 12 assists across all competitions (Transfermarkt), is unlikely at present.

Pitt-Brooke has now revealed Spurs have been long-term suitors of Maddison but echoes the notion that a deal is not close to materialising, adding he is not at the top of their list of targets for Conte.

He told The Athletic’s YouTube channel: “I think this is the one missing piece of the Tottenham squad, what if they want to play in a different way?

“If they want to play a 3-4-3 they don’t need James Maddison, but if Conte decides he wants an extra midfielder and use a 3-5-2 to unpick the defence in that way, maybe it would make sense.

“He’s clearly been on the Tottenham Hotspur radar for a very long time. I can just about see why it may work for them this summer, but clearly he’s not top of the list and he wasn’t top of the list at the start of the summer, but there would be a lot of upside if they were able to pull it off.”

Maddison would be an excellent signing for Tottenham and a player that would cap off an excellent transfer window. It is likely that he will cost a fair bit, though, and that might explain why Spurs have focused their attention elsewhere.
