‘Now he is Conte’s son’ – Sporting boss sings praises of Porro after Spurs transfer

Sporting Lisbon manager, Ruben Amorim, has been speaking to the press about his relationship with Tottenham Hotspur-bound player Pedro Porro, and was full of praise for the 23-year-old (O Jogo).

Porro had been Tottenham’s number one target for the January transfer window, but his long drawn-out move to North London hit plenty of obstacles throughout the month.

The right wing-back looked all set to move to Spurs after it was reported a full agreement had been reached between the two clubs (Fabrizio Romano). However, the switch was at risk of collapsing after Sporting Lisbon reneged on the agreement (Record).

That all appears to be smoothed out now though and the player is all set to be confirmed as a Tottenham Hotspur player before the day is through. It is expected the deal will be an initial loan move, followed up by an obligation to buy clause (Record).

Now, the departing player has been the subject of much praise from Sporting boss Amorim, who had plenty to say about his former star.

He said (via Alasdair Gold): “Our relationship is very close, he will be missed. In football, we get used to change from a very young age. One day they are our children, our best friends, and now he is Conte’s son.

“If we play against him, I already know his difficulties. We remain friends, I move on, now my favourites are others. My players are always the best in the world. Porro will be a player for another team and I wish them the best of luck.”

On how Amorim plans to fill the void left by Porro, he said: “A player with Porro’s characteristics cannot be arranged, and that’s why they beat his clause. Looking at a player who is a right back and has so many goals and assists, we have to try to build another one, that’s what we’re going to do.”

I’m still not prepared to get excited about Porro signing for Spurs until I see him in a Tottenham shirt, but these words from Amorim certainly suggest the player has left Sporting. And, what a testament to his abilities and character, too.
