‘Now I’m hearing’ – Alasdair Gold says Spurs are hopeful of completing ‘difficult deal’

Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed Tottenham are confident of completing a deal for Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence with both clubs now hopeful of the move materialising.

Antonio Conte’s side have long held an interest in signing 21-year-old Spence, who helped Nottingham Forest achieve promotion to the Premier League while out on loan last season.

Spurs have remained in talks with Boro for the London-born wing-back but a deal has stalled with both clubs still yet to come to an agreement on a transfer fee (Football.London).

Conte had been keen on sealing a move before Spurs embarked on their pre-season tour of South Korea, although this is no longer a possibility with the club departing for Asia this evneing (Evening Standard).

Gold has now revealed there slightly more progress has been made with Tottenham and Middlesbrough collectively hoping a transfer will eventually come together.

He said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast: “The reporting around this has been mad, if we’re to read everything we’ve seen Spurs have been in advanced talks with him since he was two years old, it’s mad.

“I went to various parties involved in this deal and everyone would say ‘no progress’. And from everything I’m hearing it’s a difficult deal, that’s what I keep hearing about this deal.

“But, on the positive side, I’m hearing from all sides that they’re hopeful it will go through. Before all we were hearing was Middlesbrough expecting it to go through, but now I’m hearing more from the Tottenham side that they’re hopeful this deal will be pushed through.”

The move for Spence has dragged on throughout the summer but Gold’s update is more promising and hopefully it means everything is much closer then before.

It is a bit frustrating that Spurs have not managed to sign him before the South Korea trip, but they need to make sure they at least get him in so he can see some pre-season action.
