‘Nowhere near good enough’ – Gary Neville claims Spurs pair aren’t up to standard for Conte

Gary Neville has claimed that the wing-back pairing of Sergio Reguilon and Matt Doherty is not to the required standard for Tottenham Hotspur.

Antonio Conte brought Reguilon back into the starting eleven against Manchester United following Ryan Sessegnon’s hamstring injury on Monday during the win at home to Everton.

Reguilon found himself flat footed for Manchester United’s second goal when he failed to step out with the rest of the defensive backline which allowed Jadon Sancho to be in an onside position when he raced beyond Doherty to tee up Cristiano Ronaldo.

With Conte placing such a high emphasis on his wing-backs within his tactical system, Neville believes that neither player are good enough both defensively or in the final third of the pitch.

The former United right-back suggested that Tottenham would be in a better position if Conte had better players to call upon in the wide positions.

Neville told Sky Sports‘ Premier League TV channel (12/03/21 – 20:00): “They’re not good enough, nowhere near good enough.

“I think to play that system you have to have good wing backs in it and I think Reguilon and Doherty, the quality is not there in both sides of their game, defensively and going forward. I think if they had better wing-backs, they’d be doing a lot, lot better.”

Doherty has had a couple of good games recently but over the course of his Spurs career has not been up to the expected standard, the same can also be said of Emerson Royal.

On the left hand side, Ryan Sessegnon’s injury issues continue to rear their head and Reguilon is still guilty of too many defensive lapses.
