‘Nowhere near what he was’ – Ian Wright says 2020 Spurs signing has regressed

Ian Wright has suggested that Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon is ‘nowhere near what he was’ after his move to the club last season.

Reguilon, 24, made the move to Spurs last summer from Real Madrid, but has endured a relatively patchy stint in North London so far.

The Spaniard and his side were flying high under Nuno Espirito Santo to start the new campaign, but have since come unstuck and have lost their last three Premier League games.

The last of those came during the North London Derby, which saw Arsenal dismantle Spurs with a 3-1 victory.

Reguilon has been ever-present for Spurs in the league and featured in the defeat at the Emirates Stadium, but had a fairly tough time coming up against Gunners starlet Bukayo Saka.

Although he managed to record an assist for Heung-min Son’s conciliation strike, ex-Arsenal man Wright criticised Reguilon’s performance in the NLD, claiming the marauding full-back has not improved since joining the club.

Speaking on the Wrighty’s House podcast, he said: “When Reguilon came, I looked at him and thought, ‘Jesus Christ Real Madrid have got some players’, but now I watch him and he’s nowhere near what he was and he didn’t have a clue what to do with Saka.

“Saka could go anywhere. He didn’t know whether to go inside on his strong foot or if he’d go outside like he did to set up the goal.”

Reguilon was one of La Liga’s most threatening full-backs during his time between Real Madrid and Sevilla, but it hasn’t really translated at Spurs so far.

He looks decent going forward in his credit, but the defensive side has been shaky, which a handful of wingers have picked up on.
