Nuno admits Spurs star struggled in the second half against Vitesse Arnhem

Nuno Espirito Santo has admitted that Steven Bergwijn struggled with his fitness levels in the second half against Vitesse yesterday.

Nuno made eleven changes from the side that beat Newcastle on Sunday, with the players involved at St James’ Park not even making the trip to Holland for Thursday’s game.

Before the game, a lot of the focus was on Bergwijn’s return to the side, with the Portuguese coach admitting that the winger started the season on fine form and was unfortunate to pick up an injury.

However, the former PSV Eindhoven man did not have the best of returns to the Netherlands as he, much like the rest of the Spurs side, struggled to impose himself on the game.

The home side came away with a deserved 1-0 win, with Tottenham falling to their first loss in the group stages of the Europa Conference League.

When asked about Bergwijn’s performance after the game, Nuno admitted the 24-year-old needs to build his levels of fitness after spending a few weeks on the sidelines.

The Spurs boss told Football.London about the winger’s display: “He needs to get back to levels of fitness. He was more involved in the first half.

“Second half naturally he dropped a little bit, but this is what we need for the players to be on the pitch to get the best fitness levels possible.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One should not read too much into yesterday’s performance (either individually or collectively). The team looked disjointed, which was not a surprise considering that the eleven would have hardly played together. In addition, Vitesse seemed really up for it with a boisterous home crowd behind them.
