Nuno admits youngster who ‘did so well in pre-season’ will make first start

Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed that Dane Scarlett will start Tottenham’s Europa Conference League playoff tie against Pacos de Ferreira this evening.

Scarlett was heavily involved during pre-season, finding the back of the net in the 1-1 draw against Leyton Orient.

The striker was named on the bench for Tottenham’s Premier League season opener against Manchester City in Harry Kane’s absence.

There is plenty of excitement at Spurs surrounding the 18-year-old, who signed his first professional contract with the North London club back in March, on the back of a prolific campaign for the Under-18s and Under-23s during the past campaign.

Spurs fans will be hoping that the Europa Conference League serves as an oppurtunity for the striker to get some first-team football under his belt this season and continue his development.

Nuno admitted that he has been impressed by what he has seen from the teenager so far and stated that he and his coaching staff have big expectations on the Tottenham academy graduate.

He said regarding Scarlett (via Football.London): “He’s going to start the game tomorrow.

“We have big, big expectations regarding Dane because he did so well in pre-season which you recall the game against Leyton Orient in which he scored and he was involved in many of the games in pre-season.

“He’s a young talent that we want to develop and we want to make him better and want to make him grow because there’s a lot of potential there.

“I think it should be our idea in the club to use opportunities for young players to play. When we have talent we must believe in them and go for it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While the Conference League is obviously not where we want to be, the competition will certainly be a fantastic oppurtunity for the club’s youngsters to get first-team football under their belt.

Over the last few seasons, we have lost top talents like Noni Madueke, Luis Binks and Dennis Crikin since we could not give them game time. So this competition could prove invaluable for the likes of Scarlett and Alfie Devine.
