Nuno comments on his lack of substitutions and Spurs’ lack of creativity

Tottenham Hotspur fell to their fourth London derby defeat of this season this afternoon after West Ham scooped up all three points at the London Stadium.

Spurs lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace, 3-0 to Chelsea and 3-1 to Arsenal heading into the fixture today, conceding another one to West Ham without reply.

That makes Tottenham’s aggregate London derby score this season 10-1, something that will certainly concern Nuno Espirito Santo and Daniel Levy.

Once again, Tottenham found it tricky to create consistent chances against the Hammers, beyond a Harry Kane header and a few runs in behind the defence.

Despite this and the Lilywhites going one behind in the second half, Nuno didn’t make a change until beyond the 80th minute, giving Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil short cameos, followed by Steven Bergwijn with minutes left on the clock.

Asked about his lack of subs and Tottenham’s lack of creativity, Nuno explained: “Because West Ham defend in the box with a lot of men. Not much space.

“Should’ve moved the ball faster and go to wide areas. Always difficult when all men behind the ball, difficult to find spaces and gaps.”

Asked whether the midfield lacked creativity, he said: “No. No, no, no.”

He added: “The boys were playing good and we made the changes when we needed.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I understand why he didn’t make any changes before West Ham scored. Tottenham were in the game and it looked as though it could go either way. But those changes should have been locked in as soon as Spurs went behind.
