Nuno reveals the area in which Bryan Gil needs to improve his game

Nuno Espirito Santo believes new Tottenham signing Bryan Gil still needs to improve, despite a positive showing against Pacos de Ferreira.

Spurs overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit against the Portuguese side to win 3-0 on the night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday, booking their place in the Europa Conference League group stage.

Gil, 20, joined the club in July as part of a cash plus player exchange with Sevilla, which saw Argentine winger Erik Lamela head the other way.

Nuno elected to start Gil as part of a midfield three against Pacos, and he impressed at times, notching an assist for Harry Kane to slot home Spurs’ opener.

He came close to opening his Spurs account on numerous occasions, fizzing efforts narrowly wide, while his best attempt was deflected onto the post.

However, despite what was a promising showing in N17, Spurs coach Nuno remained coy over Gil’s performance, stating the Spaniard has more to offer.

Speaking to football.london after Spurs’ win on Thursday, he said: “I think Bryan did a good game in a different position in the midfield today. He was full of energy and this is what we wanted, reaction to loss of the ball, talent.

“He brings talent and every time he goes to the final third of the pitch his is a player who needs to improve in his decision-making but we are here to support him.”

Gil gave a very good account of himself on Thursday, and it looks like a sign of what’s to come from the young Spaniard. He took up a number of good positions and always looked for the forward pass which is always positive. But Nuno is right that we should remain calm – Gil was slightly rough around the edges, but with time, that should sort itself out.
