Ollie Watkins explains why Spurs and Aston Villa are ‘very similar’

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are currently fighting it out to finish in fourth place and secure Champions League football for next year. After Villa’s recent win over Arsenal, Ollie Watkins has suggested Spurs are not much different to his team in the way they play and achieve results.

It was not a good weekend for Tottenham this weekend, as the Lilywhites were crushed by a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.

Ange Postecoglou‘s men never looked like competing in the game at St James’ Park, and subsequently lost ground in the race for a place in the Premier League‘s top four.

That’s down to Aston Villa picking up a huge win over Arsenal at the Emirates, to go three points clear of Spurs — though the latter do still have a game in hand.

Spurs and Villa have had a similar season

When asked by Football.London about that 2-0 win over the Gunners and the impact it has on the fight for fourth place, Villa’s star striker, Ollie Watkins, suggested Spurs are just as capable of pulling off big results like that, and insisted the two teams are not too dissimilar.

He said: “I think it has been a very similar season to Spurs. If they came here and won nobody would be surprised. They play a similar style to us. Some people may be surprised by that result but I’m not. We’ve shown what we can do against the big teams and we deserve to be where we are.”

I really hope we can get a win over Arsenal next time out and emulate what Villa did. It’s not going to be easy at all, and Arsenal will really want to compound the misery for us and dump us out of the race for Champions League football. But, we have the incentive of taking them out of the title race, which is even sweeter.
