‘On his knees’ – Journalist claims Spurs star is desperate for transfer away

Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has claimed that Steven Bergwijn is desperate to return to the Eredivisie.

Bergwijn has struggled to get game time since Antonio Conte arrived at Spurs almost six months ago.

The Netherlands international has shown his quality when he has been afforded chances from the bench but the Spurs boss decided not to bring him on against Brentford last week despite Tottenham’s struggles to open up the Bees.

Alasdair Gold said earlier this month that Conte likes the Netherlands international a lot and if the decision were up to him, the Spurs boss would keep the winger at the club (Football.London).

However, it remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old will want to stick around in North London, given his lack of game time this season.

Driessen believes that Bergwijn wants to return to the Eredivisie in order to ensure he keeps his place in the Dutch national side.

The journalist told De Telegraaf’s football podcast: “He has now also seen that a foreign adventure is not everything.

“Even if you score a few goals, you have no certainty of playing. He also wants to be in the Dutch national team. I think he wants to go back to Amsterdam on his knees.”

However, fellow journalist Mike Verweij suggested that Bergwijn might have missed his chance to return to Holland when Ajax failed to sign him in January.

Verweij said: “That was the moment (January window) to decide whether or not to do it. As his contract progresses, he becomes a little cheaper, but then there are also more bidders.

“And Bergwijn has, of course, already been in the starting blocks three, four times to come to Amsterdam. If it is a disappointment every time, you think at a certain point, ‘forget it’.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have no doubt that plenty of clubs will be lining up to snap up Bergwijn in the summer. I expect the winger to push for a move on the back of his frustrations this season.

It is a shame that things have not worked out for him at Spurs, partially due to the managerial upheavals during his time at the club. The 24-year-old’s talent is not in any doubt.
