On-loan Spurs man appears to hint at lack of ‘opportunity’ under Conte

Joe Rodon has seemingly hinted towards his lack of game time under Antonio Conte by stating that Rennes boss Bruno Genesio has given him confidence and an opportunity for consistent minutes.

Rodon joined Rennes on a season-long loan deal earlier this summer, with reports indicating that the French club have an option to make the deal permanent for around £16.7m (Football.London).

The defender did not have the easiest of starts to life in Brittany as he came under criticism for some of his first few displays this season (Maxi Foot).

However, the Welshman has gone from strength to strength over recent weeks. The 24-year-old put in a solid display 2-2 draw against Fenerbahce in the Europa League last Thursday.

He then followed that up with a Man of the Match display in the 1-1 draw away at Marseille on Sunday.

Speaking after the clash at the Stade Velodrom, Rodon admitted that he is over the moon with how things have gone since his move to Rennes.

The centre-back told Ouest France: “Obviously all the guys worked hard and so did I. The first half was very good, maybe we could have scored more but it’s a difficult place to come and we’re happy to come away with a point.

“The coach gives me great confidence and gives me the opportunity to play a series of matches. The more you play, the more confidence you gain. I made mistakes like everyone else but the whole team, not just me, really worked hard.

“Of course, the more time you spend in one place, the more comfortable you feel, but football is football, no matter where. I’ve loved every minute spent here so far. I hope there are still many good things to come. I am excited about what the future holds for us.”

Rodon’s shaky start to life at Rennes was understandable, given that he had hardly had any game time over the last two years. Now that he has got into the rhythm of playing regularly, it looks like the former Swansea man is coming into his own.
