On-loan Spurs man criticised by press after straight red card at the weekend

Joe Rodon has come under criticism in the French press after being shown a straight red card in the clash against Nantes on Sunday.

Rodon joined Rennes on a season-long loan deal earlier this summer, with reports indicating that the French club have an option to make the deal permanent for around £16.7m (Football.London).

The centre-back did not have the easiest of starts to life in Ligue 1 but has shown some promising signs over recent weeks, becoming a fixture in the Rennes backline.

The 24-year-old made his tenth consecutive start on Sunday as Bruno Genesio’s side hosted Nantes, and things were going perfectly for the home side who had an unassailable 3-0 lead going into the final minutes of the game.

However, with just one minute of normal time left on the clock, Mostafa Mohamed was through on goal and Rodon, who was the last man, dived in and brought down the Nantes forward, earning a straight red for the challenge.

Maxi Foot were not too impressed by the on-loan Tottenham’s general display and his decision to dive in unnecessarily.

The publication gave Rodon a rating of 4 out of 10 and wrote about his display: “Despite his difficulties in recovery, the Welsh international had a rather quiet game. At least until this 89th minute, when his badly negotiated duel against Mohamed saw him sent off.”

With the game already won, Rodon should have been a little smarter and refrained from diving in. The 24-year-old will now be suspended, which means that some of the momentum and confidence he had built over recent weeks, will be lost, which is not ideal, particularly with the World Cup just around the corner.
