One Spurs defender may be hard to offload due to high wages – Journalist reports

The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could struggle to offload the likes of Ivan Perisic this summer, given the high salary that the Croat is on.

It was reported by The Telegraph soon after Ange Postecoglou’s appointment that as many as ten players could be offloaded by Tottenham this summer as part of a mass summer clearout.

The same claim was made by The Athletic last week, with the publication naming the likes of Hugo Lloris, Japhet Tanganga, Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon, Sergio Reguilon, and Ivan Perisic as players who are expected to depart.

However, Mokbel has pointed out that finding buyers for some of these players may not be straightforward as many of them would have to take wage cuts to seal a move away.

Perisic may be hard to shift due to his high wages

It has emerged over recent days that Perisic is attracting interest from Fenerbahce (Takvim) but Mokbel is not convinced that a deal for the 33-year-old would be straightforward.

The journalist said on Last Word on Spurs: “It’s always easier said than done getting players out the door. They earn a lot of money.

“Against popular opinion, Tottenham are pretty good payers and finding clubs for players on these wages is difficult and it’s easier said than done.

“But I certainly think there will be defenders that Ange Postecoglou would be open to selling.

“Davinson Sanchez would be a player, he’s kind of admitted himself that his future may be away. So, I think he may be one they look to sell.

“We mentioned Ivan Perisic, I know strictly maybe not a defender but played wing-back a lot last season and think he might be one they look to sell as well.

“But again, he signed on very big wages so getting him off the wage bill will also be easier said than done.”

Some of these players, including Perisic and Sanchez, would be keen to play football next season, which is why I expect them to potentially agree to a wage reduction to seal a move away.

In some other cases, Tottenham might even be forced to pay off some contracts in order to offload some high earners.
