Journalist claims Spurs are ‘one to watch’ in race for Premier League star

CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has said that Tottenham Hotspur are one to watch in the race for Leicester midfielder James Maddison next summer.

It does not appear as if an attacking midfielder is on the top of Antonio Conte’s wishlist for the January transfer window, with the Italian thought to be prioritising signing a right wing-back and a forward this month (Football.London).

However, there have been suggestions over recent weeks that the North London club are considering a shock move for Barcelona’s Franck Kessie (Fichajes).

Another alternative number 8 who is alleged to be on Spurs’ radar is Maddison, with Football Insider claiming a couple of months ago that the Leicester star would jump at the chance to join the Lilywhites.

The speculation linking the England international with a move to Tottenham has died down recently, with some sources suggesting that Newcastle have emerged as the front-runner for the 26-year-old (The Northern Echo).

Jacobs has now taken to social media to explain that Leicester do not want to lose Maddison in January and that it would take a ‘massive’ offer to lure him away from the King Power Stadium this month.

The journalist further explained that although the former Norwich City man is tempted by Newcastle’s interest, he wants to ‘assess’ his options as there is the possibility of ‘more than one suitor’ next summer.

Jacobs states that Tottenham remain ‘one to watch’ and adds that moving next summer would offer the Foxes star more clarity on which team can offer him Champions League football.

Spurs Web Opinion

Maddison does not strike me as a typical Conte player, particularly compared to the likes of Weston McKennie or Franck Kessie, whose physicality, engine and technical acumen would make them a good fit for the Italian system. So, if Conte is still in charge by next summer, I would be surprised if Spurs made a move for the England international.
