‘Only one winner’ – Journalist expects PL club to beat Spurs to defender’s signature

Journalist Peter O’Rourke has claimed that Lille centre-back Sven Botman is more likely to end up at Newcastle United than Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

Tottenham are expected to prioritise signing a left-sided centre-back in the summer transfer window, with The Telegraph revealing two weeks ago that Botman is high up on the club’s wishlist.

The report added that the north London club could face competition from the likes of Newcastle United and AC Milan for the Dutch international.

The Athletic revealed last week that Botman was Newcastle’s first choice target during the January transfer window, with the Magpies having multiple offers for the 22-year-old turned down by Lille.

The publication also suggested that the defender was keen on a move to St James’ Park last month and added that Eddie Howe’s side could make another assault for him in the summer.

O’Rourke believes Newcastle will blow Spurs out of the water in terms of the transfer fee and wages.

When asked about Botman’s future, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “If it came down between Spurs and Newcastle over fee and wages, I think there’s only one winner, and that’ll be Newcastle.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Newcastle will likely be able to pay a higher transfer fee than us and offer Botman better terms. However, I am sure that a chance to come to Spurs and play under Conte would be more appealing to the 22-year-old.

I do not believe Spurs will get involved in a bidding war with Newcastle for Botman if the Magpies aggressively attack the Dutchman. Paratici will likely move on to other left sided-centre backs on his wishlist.
