Opinion: 10 players Tottenham should loan out next season

Tottenham Hotspur have made the most of the loan system this season, with 13 players currently away from the club temporarily for different reasons. Here are ten players who would benefit from a loan spell in the 2024/25 campaign.

This year, some loan moves have gone really well for Spurs players, while others have struggled to get the minutes they need.

In some circumstances, the club has acted accordingly and ended certain agreements before lining up a new move—Japhet Tanganga, for example, failed to play a game at Augsburg before being recalled and sent to Millwall instead.

Clearly, loaning players out is something Ange Postecoglou is keen to do, whether it be to offload unwanted fringe players, or to help young talent get the experience they need to develop.

Which Spurs players should go on loan next season?

Here are ten Spurs players who need a loan switch in the 2024/25 season, where we think they should go, and why they need the move.

Alfie Dorrington: Has been in and out of Postecoglou’s matchday squads this season, but never managed to get on the pitch. Injury has held back his progress, and he will likely be behind Ashley Phillips in the pecking order now. A loan move to a Championship club would be perfect for Dorrington to help him catch up.

Tanguy Ndombele: Let’s be honest, Ndombele has not done enough to persuade any club to sign him permanently this summer, and there’s still another year left on his contract. There won’t be many clubs lining up to borrow the Frenchman, but a switch to a mid-table Eredivisie side feels about right.

Bryan Gil: Just can’t seem to wrestle his way into the first-team plans at Spurs, and unfortunately, doesn’t feel suited to the Premier League. There’s a chance he may be sold in the summer, but if not, a loan with an obligation to buy is needed, most likely to a La Liga side.

Alejo Veliz: The young striker definitely has a future under Postecoglou, and it will be interesting to see how he fares at Sevilla now that he is over his injury. Another loan spell next year is probably needed to truly aid his development. Don’t be surprised if Spurs use their newfound relationship with Genoa for this one.

Jamie Donley

Jamie Donley: It’s been brilliant to see Donley picking up minutes for the first team this season, and judging by his performances in the youth team, he’s more than ready for senior football. A loan move to the Championship is certainly on the cards.

Dane Scarlett

Dane Scarlett: A frustrating loan move to Ipswich Town this season really derailed Scarlett‘s progress, but he’s still not quite ready for the Spurs first team, either. He will have to try again next term and hopefully find the right fit with another Championship team.

Alfie Devine

Alfie Devine: One of Tottenham’s most promising young talents has had a great taste of first team football this season. Devine flourished at League One level with Port Vale, and is now mixing it up in the Championship with Plymouth. One more season with a top Championship side should be enough to prepare Devine for the step up to the Spurs senior squad for real.

Yago Santiago

Yago Santiago: The Spurs youth team has been thriving this year, and while Jamie Donley has stolen the headlines there, the Lilywhites have plenty of talented starlets with a bright future. Yago Santiago is one of them, and he could really prove his worth with a loan spell in League One next year, or perhaps one of Europe’s lower reputation leagues.

Josh Keeley: The young keeper has smashed it on loan at National League side Barnet in the second half of this campaign, and he is now ready to show what he can do in a higher division. A move to League One is calling for Keeley.

Will Lankshear

Will Lankshear: Has been a major factor in how well the development side have performed this year, and is a natural goalscorer. Lankshear is still some way off first team levels, but if he can get some regular football in League One or League Two, he will make giant strides.
