Opinion: An unpopular opinion on Harry Winks

Tottenham Hotspur have produced a number of quality academy players in the last five years, with one of the most recent being Harry Winks.

Winks has been on a journey with Pochettino, with the Argentine giving him his debut, his first start, his first run as a starting XI player, right up to present day.

He has put faith in the young Englishman and Winks is now a Tottenham first-team star and an England international.

However, Winks has had a simply rotten start to the season. His possession and passing has been sloppy at best, with the most he has offered being simple sideways movement.

At times last season, we saw Winks pulling the strings and bossing games from a holding position, passing and moving, putting balls between the lines, driving through them himself.

We have seen none of that yet this season.

As a result, I have seen a whole lot of hate towards Winks on social media, with many claiming that he is overrated and not good enough for Spurs.

This worries me. I see a lot of talent in this kid and I have seen him look absolutely class in a Spurs shirt, playing in a position that doesn’t often get the glory.

If Spurs fans jump on his back now, there may be no way back for him. Look at Kieran Trippier, Spurs fans used him as a scapegoat last season, despite the fact that none of the first team were playing well. It ended up forcing him out the club and now he is thriving in Spain.

Look at Moussa Sissoko. The fans jumped on his back and it took over multiple seasons to shake off that reputation and rebuild his confidence.

Tottenham supporters need to stick with Winks and get behind every player, because I guarantee that Spurs have a special talent on their hands here.
