Opinion: Five central defenders who should be on Spurs’ radar next month

Spurs have enjoyed a relatively successful start to the 2020/21 season in all competitions, with the club having progressed to the knockout stages of the Europa League as well as navigating their way to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

Despite their form in the Premier League being far from perfect in recent weeks, with the club losing their place at the top of the table, there has been a lot to be proud of. However, improvements to the squad can be made and January is a great chance to do just that.

After conceding some frustrating goals and witnessing how vulnerable we look when Toby Alderweireld is not in the side, Daniel Levy should be looking to have another central defender on his New Year’s shopping list.

Here are five stoppers that Spurs should be considering to add to their ranks in the upcoming window:

Sergio Ramos

The thought of Sergio Ramos swapping the white shirt of Real Madrid for the lilywhite of Spurs seems like a long shot, however, this transfer is definitely one to keep an eye out for.

A legend for Los Blancos and Spain, but with his current contract set to expire next summer, there is a high chance that Real Madrid could look to receive some cash for the defender’s departure, and that would have to happen over the next month.

Ozan Kabak

20-year-old defender Ozan Kabak is another player that could be N17 bound sooner rather than later after the Turkish international was reported to be looking for a new chapter in his career.

Kabak is currently plying his trade with Bundesliga side Schalke and has made eight appearances in the league this season, showing a great level of maturity for such a young and raw defender.

Having already represented his country, Kabak is familiar with big expectations and could be a man Mourinho puts his trust into shortly.

David Alaba

Another player in a similar situation to Ramos is fellow serial winner and Bayern Munich star David Alaba, who is permitted to speak to clubs in January pending his contract ending in the summer.

Despite playing the majority of his career at left back, with age, he has slowly developed into one of the German clubs’ central defenders.

Not only does Alaba have a great deal of experience in winning it all, but a left-footed centre back would also be a great asset to welcome through the doors of Hotspur Way.

A few years ago Spurs fans could only dream of being linked to such high calibre players but the pulling power of Mourinho should not be underestimated.

Nikola Milenkovic

Next up on the list is another centre back who could be a very promising signing if Levy were able to get it across the line.

Nikola Milenkovic is a Serbian international who has attracted a great deal of attention whilst playing for Fiorentina in Serie A.

The 23-year-old has already played 14 times for La Viola in the league this campaign helping himself to two goals and one assist in the process.

Standing a huge 6” 3’, the defender has huge potential to become a great Premier League defender and would certainly be welcomed to Spurs with open arms.

Milan Skriniar

Last on the five centre back list, but by all means certainly not least, is a familiar name in Milan Skriniar.

The Inter Milan central defender was heavily linked with a move over the summer and it developed into quite the transfer saga.

Unfortunately for Spurs it never materialised, but could Spurs have another go in the new year?
