Opinion: Five centre backs Spurs should sign this summer to replace Vertonghen

The summer transfer window of 2020 has been a pleasant journey so far for Spurs but there is undoubtedly a lot more work to be done in the coming weeks.

With Jose Mourinho currently recruiting key players in the areas that need strengthening most, the upcoming season could be an exciting one if the club end this period in the same vain.

One of the areas in which Daniel Levy should look to invest money into is central defence, especially with the departure of fan favourite Jan Vertonghen.

Here is a list of the top five centre backs Spurs should look to bring to Hotspur Way this summer:

Kim Min Jae

At the top of the list is the player that has been linked with the club for a great deal of time before the window opened (90Min).

The South Korean international has made 30 appearances for his national side, scoring three goals in the process. (Transfermarkt)

Kim Min Jae is only 23-years-old and with his relations to Spurs’ Heung Min Son it could be a great move to North London.

With one long-serving centre back having left the club this summer it would be wise time for Levy to invest in a defender for the future.

Issa Diop

Next up on the list is West Ham United defender Issa Diop who would be a great talent to bring to the club.

Signing Diop would fit in with the style of Spurs’ window so far, bringing in players who are already accustomed to the Premier League.

Other clubs in England’s top flight are likely interested in the Frenchman so Levy will have to act quickly if he wants the player at Spurs next season.

The 23-year-old has already played 65 games in the league so would be a suitable option to help Mourinho develop the backline (Transfermarkt).

Milan Skriniar

Milan Skriniar is a name that has been surrounded by a lot of controversy during this window as a potential swap deal could be in the works between Inter Milan and Spurs (Tuttosport – as relayed by Sport Witness).

The swap is rumoured to include Tanguy Ndombele, who is tipped by many to become one of Europe’s top midfielders in the future.

A large majority of Spurs fans would like to see the young Frenchman succeed in North London so the deal would create a divide in the Tottenham faithful.

However, with Skriniar’s vast experience at the top level, he would be an attractive option to bring in.

Ben White

Next up on the lists of centre back’s that have the potential to be playing in N17 next campaign is highly-rated Brighton defender, Ben White.

The 22-year-old spent last season out on loan with Championship winners Leeds United and was one of their standout performers throughout the memorable promotion run.

Levy will be facing a lot of big competition for the defender as it has been reported that all of the Premier League’s top six clubs have made an enquiry (The Sun).

White made a remarkable 49 appearances last season so without a doubt has what it takes to become one of the best (Wikipedia).

Guillermo Maripan

Last on the list, but certainly not least, is Guillermo Maripan who is currently plying his trade for Ligue 1’s Monaco.

The Chile international played his debut season in France’s top division after moving on from a spell in La Liga with Deportivo Alaves (Transfermarkt). The defender made 20 appearances in the league last season scoring two goals and assisting two.

However, the club will likely have to battle against other Premier League clubs if they come to the solution that Maripan is the man to bring into Hotspur Way (CDF).
