Who would be Tottenham captain if Harry Kane left the club? We don’t want it to happen, but there appears to be a very good chance we could lose our star striker this summer.
With Bayern Munich having now made an official bid for the 29-year-old (David Ornstein for The Athletic), the worry is starting to set in.
That initial offer may have been rejected (Ben Jacobs), but the German side could well return with a higher bid that tempts Daniel Levy into parting ways with Harry Kane.
While Hugo Lloris is technically still the Tottenham captain, there is a high likelihood the Frenchman will be leaving the club this summer (Telegraph). It’s safe to assume Kane would be named the new club captain in Lloris’ absence, but what if Kane departs too?
Honestly, it was tough to pick out five based on how many new/young players there are now, and certain people being linked with moves away. But, here are five players we think could take the armband if Harry Kane leaves Spurs.
Heung-min Son
Despite a dip in form last season, Heung-min Son is arguably the second-best player in the Tottenham squad after Kane. He is a reliable source of goals and creativity and is often at the heart of everything Spurs do.
Having been with the club since 2015, Son is one of the longest-serving members of the Lilywhites squad and is a beloved figure around the club. He is also the captain of his country, South Korea, so there is every chance that his leadership experience on the international stage would stand him in good stead at club level if called upon.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
The Viking is a natural-born leader and he is not afraid to make his presence known on the football pitch. Hojbjerg is incredibly vocal and always demands the best from those around him. He is also a great speaker in interviews, and possesses a tremendous level of footballing intelligence.
It has been suggested that Hojbjerg may not quite fit into the playing style of new manager Ange Postecoglou and could be in line to leave the club (90 Min) and he has been linked with a move away to Atletico Madrid (TMW).
However, if he stays, there is a good chance he could be given more opportunities to lead the team, just as he did during his time at Southampton.
Let’s not forget, former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho once tipped Hojbjerg to become a manager when he retires as a player (Daily Mail). With this in mind, it makes perfect sense the Dane would do a good job as Tottenham captain.
Cristian Romero
A bit of a wildcard choice this one, but Cristian Romero would be a fascinating pick for club captain. He has all the desire, passion, and energy you would want from a leader, and would certainly be a formidable example for the squad to follow.
While he can be somewhat reckless and rash in his decision-making at the moment, we wonder whether the extra responsibility of being captain would help Romero to hone in his aggression a little and mature as a player.
Rodrigo Bentancur
From a whirlwind of a South American in Romero, we move to our next pick and a much more calm, cool, and collected presence in Uruguay star Rodrigo Bentancur.
He’s a fairly new addition to the Tottenham squad but his impact has been overwhelmingly positive and there is no doubt Bentancur is one of the first names on the team sheet.
The only issue right now is, Bentancur is out injured for at least the next two months and will need some time to get back to his best.
Should Kane leave this summer, Postecoglou may look for a captain who is ready and raring to go for the first game of the season, which could hinder Bentancur’s chances of being skipper.
Eric Dier
Not without his critics, Eric Dier would probably be something of an unpopular pick for captain if you asked the Tottenham Hotspur fanbase.
With just a year left on his current contract, it has been suggested that Dier will leave the club for nothing next summer (The Athletic).
Nevertheless, the 29-year-old has been with Spurs for almost a decade now and has bags of experience at the very top level for club and country.
He has even captained England on occasion, and he still remains a respected presence in the Tottenham dressing room.
There is every chance Kane leaving the club could lead to Dier becoming a more valuable authority figure for Spurs.
Spurs Web Opinion
I know some fans aren’t keen on him but I would give the armband to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. He’s a very dependable player who always gives 110% to the cause. From his role in central midfield, he is able to see the whole pitch and dictate the game with his high work rate and vocal manner. If he doesn’t stay then perhaps Heung-min Son as a player who leads by example on and off the pitch.
