Opinion: Five Spurs players who did the team proud against Aston Villa

It was by no means a perfect performance for Tottenham today in the Premier League, but they managed to carve out a 3-2 win over Aston Villa.

That makes it successive 3-2 victories after Spurs knocked out Southampton in the FA Cup before the winter break.

Let’s take a look at five players who did the team proud today:

Heung Min Son –

In all honesty, he is slightly fortunate to be on this list, but I cannot ignore a brace. Son wasted so many chances and potential chances today, often being too selfish, not being accurate enough, or taking poor touches. However, the boy came good in the end and gambled in the dying moments to be rewarded with a goal. The all-round effort is good, I just want to see him be a tad more clinical. He could have had four today.

Ben Davies –

I thought that Ben Davies was superb today. A rock on that left-hand side and also very nice in his passing from the back. He very rarely resorts to hoofing it into no-man’s-land. Davies also blocked a shot on the line when Spurs were 1-0 down and kept fighting until the end despite it being his first game back.

Steven Bergwijn –

Grew into the game today, but is starting to look better and better. In the final 25 minutes, Villa could not handle the winger. He also won the penalty at the end of the first half. I would love to see him get stuck in a bit more in terms of tackles and headers, but a great development in his Spurs career today.

Davinson Sanchez –

Looked much better today and bailed Alderweireld out of trouble a fair few times. It was a tough matchup against a big centre-forward and some huge defenders at corners, but I think Sanchez coped better than most in there.

Gedson Fernandes –

Came on and changed the game, giving Spurs a boost of pace and power in attack. Will be interesting to see what he can do when he starts a few games, but certainly always seems to make a positive difference off the bench.
