Opinion: Five Spurs players who impressed against Southampton in the FA Cup

Tottenham Hotspur have booked their place in the draw for the FA Cup fifth round, although there is no guarantee they will actually make it that far.

After drawing 1-1 with Southampton at St Mary’s, the two Premier League sides will now go head to head in a replay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Let’s take a look at five Spurs players who performed well despite the result:

Giovani Lo Celso – This man was on fire yet again for the Lilywhites. His creation of the opening goal was nothing short of sensational. He dictated the tempo in midfield and seemed impossible to shake off the ball. A big future on the cards for this man.

Serge Aurier – Defended expertly yet again for Spurs, using his physicality to bully his opposing winger. He was guilty of losing possession in the build-up to the Saints goal, but that was not enough to ruin his performance for me as others should have covered.

Japhet Tanganga – Let’s start by saying that this man is not a left-back. Tanganga was asked to play on his weak side yet again by Mourinho, but did an exceptional job. He was solid for the vast majority of the game and even cleared an Ings effort off the line.

Harry Winks – How this man came through that injury to start today is a mystery to me, but credit to him. He was a force in the midfield alongside Gedson in the first half, winning the ball and passing it off to the creators. However, once Gedson was taken off, he was simply left with too much to do alone yet again. Spurs need a new defensive midfielder to ease the burden.

Toby Alderweireld – We all know the quality that Southampton have in dead-ball specialist James Ward-Prowse, but Alderweireld was a machine in the air and at clearing the ball today. He stood up to a number of devilish crosses and deserved a clean sheet today.
