Opinion: Five Spurs players who looked woeful against Southampton in the FA Cup

Tottenham Hotspur managed to scrape their way through the FA Cup fourth round replay last night against Southampton, eventually winning the game 3-2.

However, in the midst of the victory, there were some pretty shocking performances from those in Lilywhites shirts.

Let’s take a look at five players who looked woeful at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium:

Hugo Lloris –

I was hoping to see the Frenchman kick on from that incredible performance against Man City at the weekend. However, he was uncharacteristically hesitant in coming off his line, nearly costing Spurs a goal when Ings raced clear. He also parried a number of tame shots into dangerous areas, one of which resulted in Shane Long’s goal. Needs to do better.

Jan Vertonghen –

It really is sad to see, but I just don’t think Jan has it in his legs anymore. He always looks half a yard behind play and I’m not sure he is going to get the consistent game time to improve with under six months left of his contract. This could be the beginning of the end.

Eric Dier –

I’m just not sure what Dier offers anymore. He doesn’t cover much meaningful ground. He doesn’t make many tackles or blocks. He can’t keep up with play. He is slow. His passing is often sloppy. This wasn’t his worst performance, but I just don’t see a way back into the consistent starting XI for him.

Tanguy Ndombele –

For all his tricks and flicks, Ndombele actually had a poor game. It just looks as if the midfield man is months behind anyone else in terms of fitness. It’s frustrating because a fully fit and driven Ndombele could be one of Tottenham’s best. Perhaps improvements needed off the pitch on his mental game too.

Heung Min Son –

Yes, he scored the winning penalty and many will see his inclusion as harsh, but I just think he is a shadow of his former self. He gave the ball away time and time again, wasted a number of quality chances on the break, and looks far from the man who usually fills Harry Kane’s boots.
