Opinion: Five talking points from Spurs friendly line-up – Ndombele starts and Okedina features

Tottenham Hotspur have announced the team for their final pre-season friendly ahead of the new Premier League campaign next week.

Jose Mourinho has been left with a reduced squad due to international fixtures this week, with some other big names missing for undisclosed reasons.

Let’s take a look at the five main talking points from his latest team selection:

Ndombele starts –

The Frenchman is back from a period of quarantine and starts for the first time in pre-season. This could be a last-gasp chance for the midfielder to impress Mourinho ahead of the new season after a below-par first campaign in North London.

Okedina features –

19-year-old Jubril Okedina features on the bench for the first time this week, adding to a whole host of other youngsters involved. The teenager has been with Spurs for three seasons now and plays in the centre of defence. Should be interesting to see if he gets a run-out.

Dennis Cirkin at left-back –

With Ben Davies away on international duty and Danny Rose nowhere to be seen, Dennis Cirkin starts for Tottenham at left-back today, It looks increasingly likely that the youngster will be used as a second or third choice player next season, rather than going out on loan.

Aurier still involved –

It appears that Serge Aurier is not yet close to a move as he starts for Tottenham today at right-back. New signing Matt Doherty is away on international duty so there is no sign of him. It could well be that Spurs start the Premier League season with both players involved.

Captain Son –

Jose Mourinho has handed Heung-min Son a rare captain’s armband today in the game against Watford, a nice reward for a player who always leads by example on the pitch.
