Opinion: Five things we learned from Spurs’ 1-0 over Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur secured another three points in the Premier League this afternoon with a cagey 1-0 win over Burnley.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the match:

Top four – Spurs are now back in the top four and two points ahead of Arsenal, although the Gunners have a game in hand. If they lose to Newcastle on Monday, Spurs may only need a draw on the final day. If they draw with Newcastle, Spurs could guarantee top four with a win over Norwich.

Son’s missed chances – Heung-min Son had two golden chances to draw level with Salah in the Golden Boot race today, but saw both saved by Nick Pope. In truth, you would have backed him to score at least one of them and, now that the three points are secure, he’s probably kicking himself. Fingers crossed for a brace against Norwich!

The low block – Tottenham have gone toe-to-toe with the likes of Man City and Liverpool this season, largely thanks for their breakaway tactics. However, Antonio Conte’s side have struggled to break down low block sides who whack ten men behind the ball. This was the case again today, even if Spurs did scrape their way through. Definitely, something to be addressed over the summer.

Emerson’s confidence – Emerson Royal looks a completely different player since the burst of confidence he received from the Liverpool draw. He is trying more things on the ball, taking fewer touches, and looking less nervous in possession. There are still question marks over whether RWB is his best position, but I think he looks a very decent player once given the chance to settle.

Man of the Match – For me, the MOTM award should go to Ryan Sessegnon. The left-wing-back was full of energy today and most of his runs ended in a dangerous pass or shot. In fact, he put two good chances on a plate for Son and was unlucky not to get an assist. With every passing game, he looks more and more well suited to the Conte system. And, he is still so young!
