Opinion: Five things we learned from Spurs’ 3-1 Europa League win over Shkendija

Tottenham Hotspur defeated their latest Europa League qualifier opponents, Shkendija, this evening, with the score ending 3-1 in Macedonia.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the game:

One more to go!

Tottenham now face just one more Europa League knockout qualifier before they, hopefully, make it into the group stages of the tournament. Spurs are now set to play Maccabi Haifa FC at home in early October.

Tanguy Time –

Ndombele completed a much-needed 90 minutes of football for the first time in a long time this evening. The Frenchman started back-to-back games under Mourinho but, unlike the Southampton match when he was removed at half-time, Ndombele went the distance. What’s more, he looked good doing it.

Lethal Sonny –

Son Heung-min scored and set another two up tonight to make it five goals and two assists in the past two games for the South Korean, form he will certainly be looking to take into the Premier League game against Newcastle this weekend.

Weak in the middle –

Despite the opposition Spurs were against tonight, they still looked very weak in the centre of the pitch at times, both defensively and offensively. It seems as if Mourinho is still looking to find his best two or three players to work that engine room.

The return of Dele –

Alli looked like a man with a point to prove tonight as he absolutely ran his socks off. On the ball, there were a few nice moments including a driving run towards the edge of the box and rasping shot in the first half. While there were no goals or assists for Dele, it certainly did his reputation no harm.
