Opinion: Five things we learned from Spurs’ Europa League win over Royal Antwerp

Tottenham Hotspur finished the Europa League group stage in style last night with a win over Royal Antwerp in North London.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the game:

Top of the group –

A win over Royal Antwerp secured a top spot in Group J for Spurs, hopefully giving them a favourable draw in the first knockout round. Nothing but a win would have been good enough for Jose Mourinho’s men, but they got the job done.

Winks or Hojbjerg?

This is by no means an insult or patronising, but Harry Winks looked as though he was doing a Hojbjerg impression last night. What I mean by that is he was getting in tight, sticking a foot in, showing bite, fouling when needed, and making quick, positive passes. In my opinion, Winks should indeed be looking at Hojbjerg and trying to replicate that style of play.

Winks down the tunnel –

As we said above, Winks played pretty well in the first half and definitely did not deserve to be taken off so early. Winks looked rather peeved as he walked straight down the tunnel after being subbed. In my opinion, the academy graduate is extremely frustrated with his game time this season.

Lo Celso wants a return –

Last season, it was all about Lo Celso as Ndombele faded into the distance. This season, the roles have reversed. However, the Argentine showed this evening that he is determined to win his spot back. Lo Celso demanded the ball and dictated the game against Antwerp, creating numerous chances for himself and others.

Bale free-kick –

The boy still has it! On the 59th minute, Gareth Bale stepped up to take a more-than-speculative effort from more than 30-yards out. It looked destined for the top corner but for a sensational save from the keeper. Fortunately, Vinicius was there to tap home an easy rebound. What a free-kick!
