Opinion: Five things we learned from the 1-0 loss to Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur were back in action this evening against the league leaders Liverpool, but it was yet another loss for Mourinho and his men.

Spurs defended well to start with, but conceded due to a sloppy bit of defending from a throw in when Firmino capitalised.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium:

Tottenham can defend –

Admittedly, Spurs did not keep a clean sheet and the committed the vast majority of their resources to the act of defending, but the capability is there. Defenders made solid and sensible decisions at the back, not taking any chances, covering the runs in behind, and winning duels in the air. Spurs now need to build from the back.

Best back three –

This is the best back three Spurs have had all season. Sanchez is arguably the best defender at the club now, Alderweireld is still class on his day, and Tanganga is the most promising young defender at the club. Build around these three moving forward.

Sensational Moura –

Moura was severely let down by a lack of support today, but what a shift the Brazilian put in! He held it up well, committed players, won countless free-kicks, and beat player after player in attack. If Kane was up there with him, I can’t help but feel there would be goals.

Positives to take –

It is never nice to lose, but if there was ever a loss to take positives from, it is this one. Liverpool are known for rolling past teams and scoring goal after goal. Spurs gave a good account of themselves at the back and could have drawn with the Reds on another day.

Eriksen is done –

He is starting to look like a man who is afraid to put his foot in incase he scuppers his big free move in the summer.
