Opinion: Five things we learned from the Tottenham victory over West Brom

Tottenham Hotspur went top of the league, albeit temporarily, with a narrow win over West Brom this afternoon after Harry Kane netted with just minutes left on the clock.

Let’s take a look at five things we learned from the game:

Spurs winning ugly –

It feels as if this is the third Premier League game in a row in which Spurs have won ugly after their victories over Burnley and Brighton. Fans will be hoping to see the club playing opponents off the park again soon, but it is comforting to know that Mourinho’s men can carve out a win amidst poor form.

Harry Kane… again –

Rain or shine, Harry Kane continues to prove that he is the man to clutch a win from the jaws of dropped points. The Spurs striker needs nothing more than a brief half chance to secure the win for his side. If Tottenham can keep him fit all season, his numbers are going to be impressive!

Eric Dier the rock –

Eric Dier was a rock at the back for Spurs today, not to take anything away from the performance of Toby Alderweireld. However, the England centre-back just seemed to be everywhere, blocking shots, winning headers, starting attacks, and even clearing an effort off the line.

Minutes for Bale –

Bale is ever so slowly growing into his new role at Spurs. He looks a shadow of the player he once was, but with so much time on the sidelines, that was to be expected. It looks to me as if it will be months yet before we start to see the best of the Welshman, but it is all about easing him back in.

Top of the table –

Hey, we can enjoy it while it lasts, however brief.
