Tottenham Hotspur picked up another three points in the Premier League this evening with a 2-0 victory over Brighton. Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the match.
Win, lose, repeat – The win-loss pattern continues, although Conte and the Spurs boys would have been hoping to achieve that this evening. The next task comes up against West Ham United at the weekend, a direct top-four rival, and they will need to break the curse in North London if they want to remain in touching distance of the Champions League places. Inconsistency has been the shortcoming of Spurs this season but it’s not too late to change.
Harry Kane and records – Name a better duo in world football. Not only did Kane score this evening and pull the strings in the second half, but he also broke a huge record and overtook another. Kane has now scored more away goals than anyone else in Premier League history (Opta). He is also now in the top five all-time Premier League scorers (188), overtaking Lampard (Premier League). Well done, Harry!
What Spurs have been missing – It was an important win this evening, without being outrageously good from Tottenham. They were not at their best, but they were good enough to grab a couple of goals, keep a clean sheet, and record a comfortable three points. Tottenham have really struggled to do that against mid and low-league teams this season, so it was positive to see.
Jack-of-all-trade Cristian Romero – Defender, playmaker, goalscorer, yellow card connoisseur, what doesn’t Romero do? The Argentine was everywhere tonight, getting stuck into challenges high up the pitch, bursting down the right-wing and getting in and around the box, as well as grabbing a goal, albeit via a deflection. He still has the tendency to walk the tightrope, but I feel that is part of what makes him so good.
Heung-min Son’s troubles continue – I have seen a lot of stick aimed at Heung-min Son on social media of late as the South Korean is definitely out of form. However, you can never fault his work rate as he gives everything to the team. Off the ball tonight, he was always where he needed to be and consistently tracked back. On the ball, nothing is going his way. But if you really think he is a purple patch player who thrives on confidence, then why don’t we get behind him and give him some confidence?
