Tottenham Hotspur managed to put four past Leeds United without reply this afternoon in the Premier League, shaking off the mid-week Burnley defeat.
Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:
Sessegnon vs Reguilon – While Reguilon has been out, Ryan Sessegnon has stepped up in a big way. He was sensational against Man City and perhaps had his best game in a Spurs shirt this afternoon against Leeds. His assist for the opener was perfect and it was far from the only great cross he swung in. The left-wing-back was also unlucky not to grab a goal for himself throughout the match. We could have a real battle on our hands for that starting LWB spot.
The Doherty that was promised – This was the Matt Doherty that Spurs fans thought they were getting. The Wolves right-wing-back who arrives late in the box to score goals and create goals. He scored and assisted today but could have had even more to his name. I feel sorry for him a little because he was bought as a RWB, then Spurs switched to a back four, which is not his forte. Could we finally see a run in the starting XI at wing-back?
Kulusevski on fire – Dejan Kulusevski has slotted seamlessly into the front three during his first month at Tottenham. He already has two goals against Man City and Leeds, while he was one of the few bright sparks against Burnley. Not only is he shining with his own performances, but his inverted style off the right with his pushing left foot also leaves more space for an overlapping right-wing-back, which we saw today with Doherty.
A much-needed confidence boost – Listen, we can’t read too much into this win because Leeds have conceded at least three in their past five Premier League matches. However, Spurs really needed a confidence boost today and they certainly got that. Four goals, a clean sheet, and perhaps a reminder to Conte of what quality he already has in the squad. It certainly won’t do Tottenham any harm.
Dane Scarlett off the bench – For too long, Spurs have either been chasing games or desperately attempting to see results out come the final 10/15 minutes. For the first time in a long time, a Spurs manager had the luxury of giving a youth player a run out. Yes, it was only five minutes or so, but that’s how careers start in the Premier League. The better the first-team players, the more chances Scarlett, Devine, White and co will get.
Honourable mention – Congratulations to Harry Kane and Heung-min Son on breaking the record for goal combinations!
