Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 4-2 defeat to Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur fell to another Premier League defeat away to Brighton last night, as they conceded four goals before finally clicking into gear.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:

A Wasted Opportunity

Spurs could have gone up to third in the league with a 3-0 win last night, and instead they remain down in fifth, now just three above West Ham in sixth. With rivals dropping points all over the shop, it was a perfect chance for Spurs to make up ground. Now they face a tough test against arguably the in-form Premier League side, Bournemouth, on New Year’s Day.

Let Down By Horrific Mistakes

Performance aside. Defensive errors aside. Lack of energy aside. You cannot excuse the two penalties Spurs gave away last night. Kulusevski got away with a blatant shirt pull against Everton, but not this time. And Lo Celso, I have no idea what he was trying to do sliding in from behind like that. In the end, Spurs lost by two goals. Who knows what could have happened had they not gift-wrapped two with lazy and naive defending.

Another Spurs Suspension

Not only did Kulusevski give away the most needless of penalties, but he also picked up a booking in the process, taking him to five for a season. That means the Swede will be banned for the match against Bournemouth.

Alejo Veliz – The Silver Lining

If there was one silver lining of the evening, it was Alejo Veliz scoring his first Tottenham goal with a nice swivel and finish. You never know, with Sonny leaving for the Asian Cup, we could see someone like Veliz handed a chance up front if Richarlison is moved wide left again.

January Reinforcements

Ange has already hinted at it and boy, do Tottenham need an early signing or two. The January transfer window is just days away now and Spurs are still deep in their injury/suspension crisis. Not to mention Bissouma, Sarr and Son leaving for Asian Cup and AFCON duties. Spurs arguably need a new centre-back, central midfielder, and forward to fill the gaps and improve the squad. The centre-back certainly needs to be of the level that he can walk into the starting XI too. The question is, can Spurs get that kind of business done?
