Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s crazy win over Vitesse Arnhem

Tottenham Hotspur managed to kick off Antion Conte’s reign with a victory last night, but it was certainly an eventful journey to three points.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:

A lot of work still to be done – Tottenham raced into a 3-0 lead but quickly highlighted exactly what Conte needs to work on in North London. Defending from set-pieces and, well, defending in general. Getting used to a new formation is always going to take time and, to be fair to the defenders, it is them who have been most affected by the formation change. Lots to improve on.

First taste of Romero red – It may be the first but I don’t think it will be the last. Romero has walked a tightrope ever since joining Spurs and finally picked up two yellows in one game last night. In the Premier League, he really needs to improve that side of his game or else he may miss more matches than he plays.

The flying full-backs – It is always a trademark of a Conte team, with the Italian giving Sergio Reguilon and Emerson Royal the nod last night. The two of them were arguably the two best outfield players on the pitch for Spurs. Full of energy and running, good fitness, creativity, crossing, pace, power, they were a joy to watch.

Hugo contract needed – Tottenham would have lost that game if not for Hugo Lloris. He came up with three class saves to deny Vitesse and represented once again why he deserves a new contract in North London. If I were Daniel Levy, that would be next on my to-do list.

In from the cold – Harry Winks and Davinson Sanchez were given chances to impress off the bench and certainly did themselves no harm with tidy performances. Ben Davies also made a strong starting XI, while Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso came off the bench in the second half. I suspect everyone will be given chances to start with.
