Opinion: Forget Toby and Jan – Spurs need a new contract and starts for this centre-back

Tottenham Hotspur continue to have problems at the back under Jose Mourinho, the same issue they had under their last manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs have conceded two per game under Mourinho so far, with the Special One naming three defenders in every one of his starting line-ups so far.

Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, and Serge Aurier have started all four games, with Ben Davies, Danny Rose, and Jan Vertonghen rotating at left-back.

While the defence is not Mourinho’s fault and he cannot invest in new players for another month, I do want to see him making active changes.

With Alderweireld and Vertonghen currently set to leave on free transfers at the end of the season, Mourinho should be giving others game time.

Sanchez has played well, in my opinion, but the likes of Juan Foyth should be given a chance.

I am also dying to see Japhet Tanganga handed a new contract, after he reportedly turned down the last offer. He is also set to leave on a free at the end of this season, and Spurs simply must tie him down and guarantee him game time.

Mourinho should test out the partnership between Sanchez and Tanganga, a pairing that could last a decade.
