Opinion: Four Spurs players who were woeful against Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur may have won 3-2 away to Aston Villa today, but it was far from a consistent and perfect performance from those in Lilywhite.

Spurs looked weak at the back and spurned too many chances in attack. So, let’s take a look at four players who were woeful today:

Hugo Lloris –

I’m not sure where the confident Hugo we saw against Man City has gone. He should have come off his line and simply caught the ball that led to Alderweireld’s own goal. He then came rushing off his line from multiple corners when there was no chance of him getting the ball. The Frenchman’s decision-making must improve.

Dele Alli –

This is a tricky one because Dele’s general play and movement today was class. He managed to get himself into some incredible positions to score. However, this is where the problem lies, as Alli was not on the scoresheet. In truth, he could and should have had a hat-trick today and must improve in front of goal moving forward.

Toby Alderweireld –

Again, it’s harsh putting Toby on here when he scored the equaliser to make it 1-1, but he was guilty of too many mistakes. He scored an own goal, and the man he was marking scored from a corner. That cannot happen at the top. He also found it extremely tough against Grealish and I could not help but feel Tanganga’s pace would have been a better option.

Eric Dier –

Taken off first once again. Dier was neither here nor there today in midfield. In all honesty, I think his time at the club is coming to an end. Winks looks far better when sitting in that sweeper role alone. Dier does not offer enough going forward or in defence for me.
