Opinion: Giovani Lo Celso or Bruno Fernandes – Which is a better fit for Tottenham?

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be pushing for a late move for either Giovani Lo Celso or Bruno Fernandes before the transfer window slams shut on August 8 (Standard).

They are said to be determined to bring in a long-term Christian Eriksen replacement in case they are forced to sell him after the Prem window shuts.

However, Tottenham will apparently not be signing both of the attacking midfielders at this moment in time.

But, which is a better fit?

Price –

The Standard say that Real Betis are holding out for the full £88m release clause for Lo Celso, while Fernandes could be available for £64m.

Goals –

Lo Celso scored 16 in 46 games last season (TransferMarkt). Fernandes scored 32 in 53 (TransferMarkt).

Assists –

Lo Celso set up six goals last season, Fernandes got 18 in 53.

Verdict –

Although all the stats point towards Fernandes, I would go for Lo Celso for three key reasons:

  • He seemed to be Pochettino’s first choice, which is always a good sign.
  • He plays in a much stronger league than Fernandes.
  • He plays a little deeper, which could free up Dele Alli to push forward, where he plays best in my opinion.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. I would choose Lo Celso over Fernandez for a few reasons.

    1) Mental strength is important. Fernandez cries every time things don’t go his way.

    2) Several of Lo Celso’s National Team mates are already at Spurs

    3) We got him on a loan deal with a must buy clause if we get in to Europe, meaning PSG lose out on a chunk of their bonus AND we don’t have to lay out so much right now (which means more funds to buy Dybala

    4) The fact we have so many Argentines at the club (Not forgetting Poch) Means Dybala will feel more at home too!
