Opinion: Giovani Lo Celso or Bruno Fernandes – Which is a better fit for Tottenham?

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be pushing for a late move for either Giovani Lo Celso or Bruno Fernandes before the transfer window slams shut on August 8 (Standard).

They are said to be determined to bring in a long-term Christian Eriksen replacement in case they are forced to sell him after the Prem window shuts.

However, Tottenham will apparently not be signing both of the attacking midfielders at this moment in time.

But, which is a better fit?

Price –

The Standard say that Real Betis are holding out for the full £88m release clause for Lo Celso, while Fernandes could be available for £64m.

Goals –

Lo Celso scored 16 in 46 games last season (TransferMarkt). Fernandes scored 32 in 53 (TransferMarkt).

Assists –

Lo Celso set up six goals last season, Fernandes got 18 in 53.

Verdict –

Although all the stats point towards Fernandes, I would go for Lo Celso for three key reasons:

  • He seemed to be Pochettino’s first choice, which is always a good sign.
  • He plays in a much stronger league than Fernandes.
  • He plays a little deeper, which could free up Dele Alli to push forward, where he plays best in my opinion.
