Opinion: Harry Winks – A statement that was needed

It was Steven Bergwijn who stole the headlines on Sunday. However, Harry Winks asserted himself in the midfield against Manchester City. I hope this is a sign for things to come, with the club’s midfield giving me nothing but excitement for the future.

It feels like the midfielder has been around for ages. However, Winks is only 24 years old. Showing just how bright the future could be at the club. Especially taking into consideration that both Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele are in their early twenties too.

When Harry Winks scored on his full debut against West Ham, it was certainly a special moment. It was celebrated in a similar way to a goal of Harry Kane. A feeling that one of our own was making us proud. You could see by his celebrations that it was an incredible feeling.

I believe that’s why I have grown to love our number eight so much. The celebrations. Harry Winks is seemingly always the first to celebrate a monumental goal of the club. It gives us a big lift knowing that our passion as fans is shared by someone like Harry Winks.

However, Sunday was a benchmark for Harry Winks. An assertive performance. Coming into the game, the midfield battle was always going to be massive. Coming up against a player, who for me is the best in the league, in Kevin De Bruyne and a big-money signing of Rodri was always going to be tough. However, Winks flourished.

I must say, Harry Winks had a slow start under Jose Mourinho. It was a similar situation to the one of Giovani Lo Celso. The England international was constantly fighting injuries. At the start, trying to replace the likes of Eric Dier and Moussa Sissoko was a tough job.

On Sunday we saw a performance that we all hoped would come from the midfielder. Winks was always driving through the midfield. It was a performance of so much composure. In addition to this, the amount of interceptions made throughout the game was unbelievable. It was seemingly the turning-point of the match. The fact that Winks spotted the short-corner coincided with the sending off for Zinchenko. A moment that simply changed the game.

The games are coming thick and fast for Spurs. I hope Winks can carry on from Sunday. The fearlessness that I saw reminded me that there is fight at this club. A statement that at times this season I have doubted.
