Opinion: Heung-min Son’s stats in the Bundesliga vs Thuram and Gonzalez

Rumours have emerged recently that Spurs are considering moves for Marcus Thuram and Nico Gonzalez.

Thuram and Gonzalez are both 23-year-old left-wingers. They also both ply their trade in the Bundesliga, for Borussia Mönchengladbach and AFB Stuttgart respectively.

Heung Min Son was playing in the Bundesliga as a 22-year-old left-winger when Spurs signed him back in 2015. Son has gone on to be one of Spurs’ best players, playing an integral role for the club in recent years.

In Son’s final season in the Bundesliga, the South Korean notched 11 goals and 3 assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances (28 starts). Then, in Son’s first season in the Premier League, aged 23, he scored 4 goals and provided 1 assist in 28 league appearances (13 starts).

When Thuram was 22 (two seasons ago) he registered 10 goals and 8 assists in 31 Bundesliga appearances (28 starts). Unfortunately, Thuram struggled with injuries last season. But nonetheless, Thuram still scored 8 goals and provided 7 assists in 29 league appearances (20 starts).

Nico Gonzalez was 22 for the majority of this season, only turning 23 in April. Similar to Thuram, Gonzalez struggled with injuries, only making 15 total league appearances (10 starts).

In that time, Gonzalez scored 6 goals and created 2 more. Two seasons ago, Gonzalez scored 14 and assisted 3 in Bundesliga 2.

With Son rumoured to be close to finalising his contract extension with Spurs, it is unlikely that Daniel Levy will sign both Thuram and Gonzalez, but we could see one coming through the doors this summer.

Given how long it has taken Son to sign his contract, Spurs fans will be hoping that the South Korean is not on his way out this summer with both Thuram and Gonzalez coming in.

Only time will tell.
