Opinion: Hugo Lloris’ sparkling return to form is a huge boost for Spurs

France’s World Cup winning captain and Tottenham’s number one Hugo Lloris has previously been on the receiving end of strong criticism.

His costly errors in matches lead to many doubting his capabilities. However, since the 2019/20 Premier League campaign kicked off, Lloris has been back to his very best. He has made vital save after vital save and ultimately secured valuable points at both Manchester City and Arsenal.

Hugo Lloris’ abilities as an excellent shot-stopper and sweeper keeper have never been doubted. However, for both club and country, he endured a period in his career that was, to put it frankly, error-prone.

Many forget the blunder he made in the 2018 World Cup Final when he gifted Croatia a goal, or his misjudgment of a cross that lead to Alvaro Morata heading home at Stamford Bridge a few years ago.

In fact, for almost three seasons from the beginning of the 2015/16 campaign, Lloris had made the most errors leading to goals – ten in total – of all the Premier League goalkeepers (Sky Sports).

With five games down this season, we have thus far seen a very different Lloris. He has performed brilliantly when it has mattered and prevented Spurs from losing important away games.

It is a monumental boost for the club if Lloris consistently performs at the highest level this season. When he does, there are few goalkeepers in the world who can outperform him. If Lloris continues this form, Spurs have a strong chance of picking up their first piece of silverware since 2008.
