Opinion: It is better for Reguilon to stay at Spurs and turn down Madrid return

Sergio Reguilon joined Tottenham in the 2020 summer window from Real Madrid. The fee of £27 million (Transfermarkt) seemed like clever business, however with a clause for a Madrid return included, there was always concern amongst fans.

The clause stated that Los Merengues could buy back the Spaniard for a fee of just over £40 million (football.london) in the summer of 2021 or 2022. Therefore, it is very possible that Sergio could return to his boyhood club in the near future.

However, I believe he should choose to stay at Spurs and this is why:

One main reason for this is that Reguilon may struggle for first-team football in Spain. Real Madrid already have two first-team left-backs in the form of Marcelo and Ferland Mendy.

This season, Marcelo has played 8 games at left-back whilst his French counterpart has played 22. Ferland has been a rock at the back and, up until 25th October 2020, Madrid hadn’t lost a game in which Mendy had started (Infinite Madrid).

This suggests that Sergio may well struggle to get into the first-team position if Mendy continues to be so formidable.

It is quite known in recent years that Zidane has also had a very strong bond with the Brazilian, Marcelo. So, for Mendy to replace him, it gives us an idea of just how strong he really is. At just 25 years of age, he has a bright future ahead of him too (Wikipedia).

Therefore, if Reguilon did leave to join the 13-time European champions, he would have to fight against one of the greatest left-backs of all time and a formidable up-and-comer in Mendy.

This is why he should stay on the white side of North London. Reguilon would easily be number one in our ranks, considering he is only currently up against the below-par Ben Davies.

He would have the opportunity to improve his game next season in a team that is hopefully fighting for silverware on multiple fronts.

I hope that Sergio Reguilon will use his sense and stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He is a superb player that is a joy to watch. However, if he did choose to leave, I would not blame him at all due to the current shambles we have at the moment in North London.
