Opinion: Japhet Tanganga – Tottenham’s next breakthrough star?

At age 20, Tanganga has always been a prospect, and the fans who watch our youth teams have always taken a liking to him.

However, he didn’t seem to be very high up the clubs rankings of centre backs, if not for injuries he would have probably never been given his chance this year either.

During this pre-season for Spurs, he has shown how assured, composed and confident he is on the ball, but also how well he reads the game and cuts out any errors from other players.

It was a shock to me when I saw him starting for us because I haven’t heard the usual “hype” that builds when we have a promising young player (for example Troy Parrott). While Japhet’s success has come as a surprise, Pochettino clearly rates him and he is repaying his faith with some top-class performances.

He’s also won over the fans with these performances and has been regarded as our player of pre-season by many.

Even fans of other clubs were massively impressed with him, with Bolton fan (@MagicalMurphy_) saying:

So, it is clear how much he has impressed, and I can see him truly being given some game time this season, especially due to the injury of Juan Foyth.

He’s had incredible games against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, and Karim Benzema, which is another reason why I’m a fan of pre-season.

A young player would never get the opportunity to go up against such top-class players and this will be a huge learning curve for him.

Japhet Tanganga is definitely a winner in the 2019/20 pre-season, he’s pretty much completely transformed his Spurs career, and it seems Poch is now a fan too, so I personally cannot wait to see more of him in action!
