Opinion: Jose Mourinho has made a mistake with his Champions League squad

I believe that Jose Mourinho has made a big mistake with his Champions League squad for the match against Bayern Munich tomorrow night.

The game has absolutely nothing riding on it, as Bayern have already secured the top spot in the group and Spurs have guaranteed themselves second.

No matter what the result tonight, the table will remain the same for the top two sides, giving Mourinho the chance to rest key players and blood fringe stars and academy talents.

Therefore, I believe he has made a big error taking a number of senior stars on the trip to Germany, when he could have handed them a couple of days rest. Better still, they could have stayed at home and continued to train as a first-team at Hotspur Way.

The likes of Heung Min Son, Lucas Moura, Davinson Sanchez, and Toby Alderweireld have already played a lot of football under Mourinho and could surely do with a rest.

What if Son picked up an injury in a nothing game? What would be the point?

If you ask me, it is high risk with no reward at all from Mourinho. Even if he doesn’t play them, it’s a wasted chance to give them a rest at home.

He should have taken youngsters and fringe players only, playing the likes of Foyth, Tanganga, Rose, Walker-Peters, Skipp, Wanyama, Lo Celso, Parrott, Sessegnon, and Eriksen.

  1. It’s Bayern AWAY in the champions league, Spurs can’t afford to be humiliated. Its an hour and a half flight to Munich not half way round the world AND as mentioned he can only play CL squad members!!

    • You’re missing my point. It isn’t about the travel time at all. Would you rather us get a draw or win away to Bayern in a game that means nothing and Son picks up a 3 month injury, or lose heavily and avoid all risk of injury to first-team players. I don’t see the logic of risking people in what is essentially a friendly

      • Losing heavily would be hugely damaging to moral. It’s important to keep up the momentum and players want to play these big games so I don’t think the likes of Kane and Son would be happy to be left out. It’s also far better to have just one debutant playing with the full first team squad than to make wholesale changes putting out a b squad as the players usually take time to gel so always look disjointed as a team when this happens

  2. Mourinho has only been in the job for a handful of games, he will still be learning about his players every opportunity to see them in training and playing games surely helps in the long term. When do they have the winter break ?
